Robin Weldy on Privacy and Political Theater

Editor’s Note: As part of our ongoing effort to educate and inform voters, we have invited Democratic candidates running in the 2026 election to submit information about their campaigns and their stance on issues of importance to voters. The article below is from Robin Weldy, a candidate for Idaho State Senate – District 6. The opinions expressed are those of the candidate and do not necessarily reflect the position of the Nez Perce County Democrats.

Two weeks ago, the Idaho House of Representatives voted to advance a memorial asking the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit its 2015 ruling on same-sex marriage.

As a candidate for the Idaho State Senate in District 6, I find it deeply concerning that taxpayer time is being spent on non-binding political theater instead of the issues that actually keep Idahoans up at night.

This memorial has no legal weight. It won’t lower your property taxes, it won’t fix the potholes on our highways, and it won’t help a single first-time homebuyer in our district build equity. It is a symbolic gesture designed to divide our communities and attack settled rights that have been the law of the land for over a decade.

In North-Central Idaho, we value our privacy and our independence. We believe in an Idaho where the government stays out of our private lives and respects the freedom of our neighbors. By focusing on social grievances from the past, extremist politicians in Boise are ignoring the challenges of our future—like protecting our public lands for the next generation of hunters and anglers, and ensuring our schools are fully funded.

District 6 deserves a Senator who is focused on the work at hand, not one who is looking for new ways to insert the government into your home. It’s time we stop the theater and start solving the real problems facing Idaho families.

Sincerely,

Robin Weldy Candidate for Idaho State Senate, District 6
