Richard Gayler announces run for Idaho Senate, District 6

Richard Gayler has announced he is running for the Idaho State Senate District 6 seat in the upcoming May 19, 2026, primary election.

For many years Gayler served as a U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Officer for the District of Idaho, covering Benewah, Latah, Nez Perce, Clearwater, Lewis, and Idaho counties. “This role has given me a unique window into the lives of our neighbors-their struggles, hopes, and dreams. I’ve seen firsthand the challenges families face with employment, education, transportation, and access to mental health and substance abuse services. These are not just issues on paper; they are the realities that shape our daily lives.”

Gayler is running for state senate because he is tired of the antics of our state legislators, their mismanagement of finances and state agencies budgets as well as the disregard they have for the citizens of our district and state. He is running as a moderate democrat. “The time is now to change the course of our political representatives. The time is now to rebalance the legislative power in the state legislature and elsewhere to bring common-sense legislation that helps Idahoans and not special interest groups, the wealthy and self-motivated legislators. I’m here to fight for right and not the wrongs.”

Gayler’s priorities include public school funding and moving it out of last place nationally in pupil funding. “Our schools, and especially our high schools, are the hub of our communities in District 6. Our current legislators don’t believe in the quality of our schools, the quality of our teachers, and our student’s potential, which is flat out wrong. As a federal Probation Officer under the U.S. Court system, our motto was ‘Commitment to Excellence’. I continue to carry that motto through life, and if elected as a state senator, my goal will be to help improve people’s lives and strive to bring the best out of all of us.”
