Over 100 local Democrats rallied at Vernon Park in Clarkston on Labor Day, September 1st, as part of a nationwide protest in support of “workers over billionaires”. The rally was a collaboration between New Perce County and Asotin County Democrats.
Several local organizations had tables set up in the shade. At the NPC Dems table, Molly Steele was collecting signatures for three petitions. One was supporting Todd Achilles’ Independent candidacy for the US Senate seat currently held by Jim Risch. The second was the “Not A Dollar More” petition that gave people a chance to let our Idaho legislators know they didn’t want any more tax dollars allowed for private school vouchers. The third petition was advocating for new legislation to establish a right to abortion before fetus viability, post-viability abortions to protect the health of the mother, right to privacy and healthcare provider liability protections.
Carmela Conroy, a candidate for Washington State’s 5th Congressional District seat, now held by Michael Baumgartner, spoke to the crowd. She talked about her grandfather and father’s experience as union members and her own long career in public service.
The temperature was predicted to be over 100ºF, but only reached into the mid-90’s. There was ample shade in the park and the rally had a more festive atmosphere than some earlier ones.
