Area legislative candidates set campaign efforts aside on July 30th to tackle regional food insecurity, coming together to volunteer at the Lewiston of The Idaho Foodbank facility in Lewiston.
Candidates representing Legislative Districts 6 and 7 spent the morning packaging 2,000 pounds of bulk pasta into individual 2-pound bags. The newly portioned staples will be distributed through the food bank’s network of local partner pantries and community programs across North Central Idaho.
The collaborative volunteer session brought together Mary Griffin, George Yeatter, Lisa Puckett, Don Puckett, Vickie Fadness, Yvonne Wright, and candidates Pete Gertonson (Idaho District 7 House Seat B), Larry Nostrant ( Idaho District 7 House Seat A), Patrice Yeatter (Idaho District 7 Senate), and Robin Weldy (Idaho District 6 Senate) from neighboring districts covering Nez Perce, Latah, Lewis, Idaho, and Adams counties. Participants noted that hunger is a nonpartisan issue affecting families across district lines, making the joint effort a natural focus for community service.
Volunteers worked assembly-style to measure, weigh, and seal 1,000 individual bags over the course of the morning. Food bank representatives emphasized that volunteer support is critical to keeping operations running efficiently and ensuring shelf-stable goods reach households in need without delay.
